Special Treatments

We are dedicated to providing leading edge options for non-surgical healing and recovery so you can recover and go on to enjoying life as quickly and successfully as possible. Special treatments we provide are considered new or outside of traditional physical therapy treatment. Each of these treatments is described in this section and we provide links to relevant websites for you to learn more about these treatments.

If you have questions about these special treatments and how they may benefit your recovery, please discuss them with your physical therapist. They can discuss how these treatments can accelerate your recovery. They all dovetail with your other still very important therapeutic activities and treatments we provide, they do not replace them.

Most of these treatments are not covered by private medical insurance, Medicare, and other 3 rd party payors so we require patient payment at the time of service for these non-covered items. We designate in each description of the treatment whether we can bill the treatment to your medical insurance. If you have questions about these special treatments and how they may benefit your recovery, please discuss them with your physical therapist.

Tissue Regeneration Technologies (TRT)
Tissue Regeneration Technologies

Accoustic wave technology was first used over 30 years ago to treat kidney stones (lithotripsy). Sound waves are throughly research technology and are currently the standard of care for stones, pain pathologies and bone healing. TRT's patented, unfocused acoustic waves, known as SoftWaves, produce both positive and negative (Tensile) forces on cells. The probe generates waves that affects cells within a two-inch diameter, but only the injured/diseased (pathologic) tissue reacts, triggering an immune response. This increases the blood flow to the pathologic tissue and migrates stem cells to it, which accelerates healing and helps to quickly restore function.

“TRT's soft focus sound waves spread energy over large areas, allowing for more comfort. There are no side effects. Fewer treatments are needed for better outcomes and greater depth of penetration for effective treatment of the skin and subcutaneous tissues. This treatment promotes wound healing, anti-inflammatory effects and tissue regeneration.

Some of the conditions that have been effectively treated by TRT include:

  • Low Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Knee Pain
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Shoulder Tendinopathies With or Without Calcification
  • Epicondylitis (Golfer's Elbow / Tennis Elbow)
  • Achilles Tendonitis / Tendinopathy
  • Patellar Tendonitis / Tendinopathy
  • Adhesive Capsulitis / (Frozen Shoulder)
  • Sprains & Muscle Strains

Class IV K-Laser Therapy

LASER Therapy is also known as photobiomodulation. It entails the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near infrared) to generate a photochemical response in damaged or dysfunctional tissue. LASER works by creating an increase of vasodilatation (blood supply), bringing in oxygen to the cells. It stimulates the lymphatic system, pulling edema (swelling) and inflammation from the area. LASER therapy can alleviate pain, reduce inflammation and accelerate recovery from a wide range of acute and chronic clinical conditions.

The following are a few of the benefits of laser therapy:

  • Accelerates tissue repair and decreases pain
  • New vessel growth and increased oxygenation
  • Speeds tissue repair
  • Prevents further cell damage in the body
  • Helps to prevent tissue re-injury
  • Gives cells more energy to do their specific tasks in the body
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Stimulates the body's immune system to promote healing
  • Increases antioxidative mechanisms in the cell
  • Stimulates new blood vessels for improved blood circulation to tissues

D-Actor 100 Radial Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) - Shock Wave System - by STORZ Medical
D-Actor 100 Radial Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT)- by STORZ Medical

Radial Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) involves introducing high-energy sound wave into particular areas of the body to systematically eliminate pathological alterations of tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones. Acoustic Wave Therapy was developed from lithotripsy for fragmentation of kidney calculi and radial shock wave therapy for muscle treatment, generates high-amplitude acoustic pulses of short duration. Radial acoustic waves are used to accelerate the healing process, stimulate metabolism and improve blood circulation to help damaged tissue in many areas of the body. The beneficial effects of AWT are often experienced after only 1 or 2 sessions. This therapy eliminates pain and restores full mobility, which improves your quality of life.

Many years of experience have confirmed that certain pathological alterations of tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones – the root causes of your pain – can be eliminated systematically, when performed by qualified therapists. Thus proving that extracorporeal shock wave therapy is a highly effective way to treat pain with minimal risks or side effects.

How are treatments performed?
First, our therapist will find where you are having the pain by palpation and discuss his or her findings with you. Then, our therapist will apply a skin gel to the treatment area, which will allow the shock waves to be introduced into your body without any loss of energy. The shock waves are then applied as the therapy head is moved over the pain region in a circular motion.

How many treatments are needed?
In general, an average of 5 to 10 treatments are necessary at 1-2 treatments per week.

Is it normal to experience pain during treatment?
ESWT creates a mechanical stress that may cause mild discomfort during treatment. Depending on the desired depth of penetration, varying amounts of energy may be utilized to create the desired effect and some soreness may be experienced post-treatment.

How long does each treatment take?
Each therapy session takes between 8 and 23 minutes, depending on the disorder being treated.

How many treatments are needed?
In general, an average of 5 to 10 treatments are necessary at 1-2 treatments per week.
